An evening of marvels to the senses... a unique experience long remembered
From all over the ancient Kingdom of Dara, guests in colourful raiments hasten to attend the Palace Gala in honour of the beautiful young Princess Darawadee.
As they enter the Palace grounds, wandering on the walkways admiring lush plants, running streams and floating gardens, villagers entice them with handicrafts, fruits, vegetables and flowers all the way to the Palace gates.
The opulence of the Royal Courtyard is a stunning sight to behold. Hanging lotus leaves sway in the soft, cool breeze, complementing the magnificent arrangement of cascading lotus flowers in the centre. The beauty of the evening is intensified by the glow of flickering candlelight, casting romantic shadows on the wonderland of orchids and other gorgeous blooms.
Sumptuous displays of delicacies beckon guests to sample the wide variety of delectable items, demonstrated by graceful Ladies of the Court dexterously lifting miniature Half-moon Coconut Creams with tasty fillings, spicy Green Papaya Salad, mini Crispy Pancakes, northern-style Khao Soi Chicken Curry Noodles and more. Others gather around to watch the fascinating, intricate fruit-carving demonstration.
Sweet sounds of classical music float in the air, accompanying the supple movements of the Dara dancers, changing to throbbing drumbeats signifying the lively troupe from the north-east and other entertainment.
The party never ends!
Founded by Madame Erawan, a grand lady of immense fortune during the heyday of the 1950s, the place to see and be seen was the exclusive Club 494 on Rajdamri Road. The club became an instant success, frequented by her many friends to enjoy an evening of lavish entertainment.
At the club, an impressive Indian doorman, from the royal household of the former Maharajah of Delhi, guards the entrance as elegant guests slowly trickle through. Blending the best of both worlds to create an ambience of elegance with a warm, residential feel, guests are immediately attuned to the luxurious surroundings.
The mood of mystery and excitement prevails. Past the ornate, marble rococo fountain, they enter the Grand Salon to be greeted by friends seated at circular tables draped in dramatic cloth, lit by the inviting glow of silver candelabras. Some recline chatting on sofas surrounded by priceless antiques, while others begin to dance to the lively jazz band flown in especially for the occasion. Encouraged to show off their talents, guests take up the microphone to croon their favourite songs.
Guests wander around to sample tasty helpings of international food preparations set at intervals around the club. The freshest seafood selections are displayed on a fancy ice carving, Italian pastas and savoury sauces, whole salmon baked in a salt crust, Japanese sushi, an Asian corner with popular delicacies and more.
Fun for everyone. A variety of entertainment revolves around the club, from magicians, lithe acrobats and mystifying fortune tellers to roving cigar ladies and continuous, lively music.
Olé, Olé... it's non-stop fun and dancing, let's keep swaying!
Bangkok buzzes with glee, impatiently awaiting invitations to the talk of the town event, Viva Carnaval, hosted by long-time resident, Brazilian Senhor Tino. The unique splash held at his imposing mansion always surpasses eager expectations each year. The order of the evening is fun for all - and come dressed to kill!
When the awesome gates, covered with a profusion of green leaves, are thrown wide open, guests gasp at the sight of the natural beauty of his gardens, dotted with fountains artfully lit by coloured spotlights, sprouting a rainbow of cooling spray. To set the mood, each guest is handed a fancy mask to wear before they continue.
Trailing around lush plants with lovely blossoms, they arrive at the courtyard where they are immediately dazzled by a miracle of colours... bright red, blushing pink, deep purple, glowing orange... long, flowing, satin streamers are intertwined all over the courtyard. Floating from high above, streamers rest elegantly on each table, set in the same scheme tone and complemented by a cascade of tropical blooms. Waiters in costumes and feather headdresses escort the guests to their tables.
Vibrant with the hot, hot, hot beat of salsa rhythms by a calypso band, guests begin to dance to the irresistible samba, cha-cha-cha and mambo. Others enjoy a culinary presentation of international flavours, sampling such delights as the monumental paellas, crispy quesadilla, tender churrascos, tasty tacos and more.
The Carnaval peaks in crescendo. Guests join in the conga line, happily weaving around the courtyard in unison with the lively dance steps.
